Picture Purr-fect

Look at Life from God’s Perspective

If you do not raise your eyes you will think you are the highest point.

ANTONIO PORCHIA

Rajah was a picture purr-fect kitten. She was beautiful and appeared to pose every time she saw a camera. We have photos of her sitting on the dining room table beside a vase of flowers. We have a shot of her on the piano. And of course there are many pictures of Rajah being held by those who loved her. But my favorite is of Rajah actually perched up on a fishbowl. She would sit there for hours watching the fish swim around. From her seat up above, she could see everything that was going on in the water.

Although this made for a great picture, I’m sure the fish were not at all happy about Rajah’s antics. Here they were, swimming in their nice safe comfortable bowl, and along comes a huge cat, staring down at them. Of course, their view was limited, and so was their comprehension. But if they could have understood their plight, they probably would have felt trapped.

I also have to wonder what might have happened if those fish had a chance to be lifted out of their bowl and sit on top, looking down. If they’d had Rajah’s view of their world, I can only imagine how their perspective might have changed!

There are times in my life when I feel as though I live in a fishbowl, swimming around in circles, trapped by my circumstances. I had such moments the first time I worked on a feature film.

Helping to produce the film was an incredible experience. I knew very little about making a film at the start. So much was new to me, but I felt led by God to do this, and the writer-director of the film felt I should work for him too.

Even though I knew God sent me there, it didn’t take me long to allow everyone and everything else to take over my thoughts. There were sets to be designed, props to find, characters to cast, people to be fed, locations to be found. And I had many miles to travel. Sometimes after a long day of filming I had to drive three hours to get home. It was at those moments that I jumped into the fishbowl. I’d spend those three hours going over all the negative things that had happened that day. I would tell myself that it was time to quit. I felt overwhelmed by murky water and other fish crowding in on me, and I couldn’t see much else.

But God, in His infinite mercy and grace, didn’t leave me in that fishbowl. Through His Spirit and His Word, He lifted me up to sit atop the bowl with Him. He nudged me to view things from His perspective, which gave me a very different picture. Of course, I couldn’t know everything He did, but from that vantage point I once again caught sight of why He had me there.
